Recommended daily dosage
The amount of calcium you need depends on the type of bariatric surgery you’ve undergone. Based on internationally recognised guidelines from leading scientific associations (ASMBS and IFSO), we recommend a daily intake of 1,200 to 1,500 mg of calcium.
As your body can only absorb a limited amount of calcium at one time, it’s important to divide the dosage across the day. We advise taking no more than 500 mg of calcium per intake. This gives your body time and capacity to absorb the calcium efficiently.
The illustration below shows the most common recommendations for daily calcium intake after different types of bariatric surgery. This amount contributes to maintaining strong bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
Why calcium is not included in our WLS products
Calcium is intentionally not added to Elan’s WLS products (Compass, Believe and Supreme). This is for a good reason: calcium can interfere with your body’s absorption of iron – and good iron absorption is essential for preventing anaemia.
Important for your health
Are you taking Elan Calcium Soft Chews in addition to your WLS supplements? Make sure not to take them at the same time. Leave at least 2 hours between intakes to allow your body to absorb iron effectively.

Recommended dosage
1 to 4 Soft Chews per day, preferably taken at bedtime and/or in the morning. It is recommended to take a maximum of 1 Calcium Soft Chew per intake. It is also recommended to keep 2 hours between intakes. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Excessive consumption may have a laxative effect. Please consult your doctor for advice.
